Fake QR Code Scam – Why You Should Always Double-Check Before You Scan

Fake QR code scams are on the rise — and they’re catching people in places you wouldn’t expect. QR codes are now everywhere – at parking meters, cafés, posters, and even donation points. But recently, one of our team members was nearly caught out by a fake QR code scam while paying for parking in Loughton. Luckily, they spotted something suspicious before entering their card details.

Here’s what happened, how this type of scam works, and what you can do to avoid falling for it.

What Is a Fake QR Code Scam?

A fake QR code scam happens when someone places their own QR code over a legitimate one. It might look completely normal, but scanning it takes you to a different website — often one designed to steal your personal or payment details.

These scams are popping up in places where QR codes are trusted and frequently used, like:

  • Car parks and pay stations
  • Restaurants and bars
  • Train stations
  • Public posters and signs

Once scanned, the code might send you to a lookalike payment page or even install malware if you download an app or file.

A Real Example: Loughton Parking Scam Attempt

In Loughton, a staff member went to scan a parking sign’s QR code as usual. But in this case, the code had been covered with a new sticker. It led to a website that looked similar to the usual parking app, but the web address was slightly different, and it asked for full card details.

They didn’t go through with the payment — and that quick instinct likely saved them from having their card details stolen.

This is exactly how a fake QR code scam works. And it can happen anywhere.

How to Spot a Fake QR Code Scam

Here are a few tell-tale signs to help you recognise a scam QR code before you scan or submit anything.

1. Look for sticker overlays

If the QR code looks like it’s been stuck on, or covers another code, that’s a major red flag.

2. Check the website after scanning

Take a second to look at the web address. Is it spelled correctly? Is it the official domain of the service you’re using? If not, back out.

3. Watch for early payment requests

Legit services usually don’t ask for card details immediately. If the first thing you’re prompted for is your bank card or login, be cautious.

Tips to Stay Safe

  • Use the official app for parking or services when possible
  • Don’t scan QR codes from posters or signs that look tampered with
  • If you’re unsure, type the URL manually instead of scanning
  • Never enter card or login details unless you’re 100% sure of the website
  • If you see a suspicious QR code, report it to the venue or local council

What to Do If You Think You’ve Scanned a Fake Code

If you scanned a QR code and entered information into a suspicious site:

  • Contact your bank right away and report the activity
  • Report the scam to Action Fraud at actionfraud.police.uk
  • Run a scan on your phone for malware if you downloaded anything
  • Let others know, especially if it’s a public or shared location

Are QR Codes Safe?

Yes — in most cases, QR codes are completely safe. But just like links in emails or texts, they can be faked. It’s easy to trust them because they’re so widely used, but it’s always worth checking the source before you tap.

Being a little cautious goes a long way.
